TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE AT THE MARYLAND ZOO

A quick drive from The Academy on Charles is a fun attraction that engages people with the wonders of the living world.

It’s known as the Maryland Park Zoo, and it spans more than 135 acres inside Druid Hill Park.

Established in 1876, it’s the third oldest zoo in the country, and visitors can see nearly 200 species from across the globe.

Animals include:

KINKAJOU

Kinkajous are native to Central and South America where they live in several types of forest habitats. Their coloring ranges from light brown to gray, and they weigh between three and ten pounds. Kinkajous live in small groups, and often hang upside down from their tail while feasting on fruit.

RED RUFFED LEMURS

In the wild, red ruffed lemurs only call the remote rainforests of northeastern Madagascar home. They’re active during the day, and spend almost all of their time high in the treetops. These animals are critically endangered, and the Maryland Zoo belongs to the Madagascar Fauna Group which helps to conserve the country’s unique wildlife, including lemurs.

SITATUNGA

Sitatungas are swamp antelopes that can survive where few other antelope species could. They live in the marshes and muddy swamps of central Africa, and their splayed hooves prevent them from sinking when they walk on soft terrain.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES TOURS

Visitors can enhance their zoo experience by enjoying one of the many behind-the-scenes tours. One of the choices is the Penguin Coast, which is the largest outdoor African penguin exhibit in North America. During the tour, participants will see the nesting room and food preparation area, as well as learn what life in the colony is really like.

The Maryland Zoo is just one of the exciting attractions near our apartment community. If you are searching for a place to live, please contact us to schedule a tour. Our leasing agents would love to show you firsthand all we have to offer.
